    Google Voice To Compete With Skype

    Filed under: mobile, technology;

    Today Google launched a new service, which is similar to that offered by the eBay owned Skype, called Google Voice. Some of you may remember that Google purchased a phone company in 2007, by the name of Grand Central Communications. Well, they are now using the technology of said phone company in Google Voice, which will allow users to enjoy cheap calls made through the internet.

    Google perhaps even has a leg up on rival services, such as Skype, because they offer users an assigned telephone number in which they can receive calls to anywhere, anytime. Skype does not offer such a number.

    Unfortunately, the new service is only available within the US at this time, and only to those customers of the Grand Central Telephone Company. So, for now, I’ll be sticking with Skype, but I have to say that I am eager to try out this new Google offering.
